Saturday, November 19--Holiday Tea--plus Bonnie Phelps: Kindle Vella- What Is It and Is It Right for You? (in-person meeting)
Join us for our annual in-person Holiday Tea, held at the Sierra 2 Center in the Learnery Room from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It's a wonderful time to network, congratulate each other on the year's accomplishments, and share goals for 2023!
Amid the festivities, our renowned President Bonnie Phelps will share her experiences with Kindle Vella. In July 2021, Amazon introduced a new storytelling option – stories told one small chunk at a time. Kindle Vella short episodes are meant to give readers the option of reading during short breaks in their day. The new platform is a way for readers to discover new fiction and a new way for authors to generate revenue from the Kindle Direct Publishing service. Bonnie will present an overview of the platform and what she's learned since publishing her first episode in January 2022.
NCRW's President for 2022, Bonnie writes contemporary romance and has self-published eight books. During her professional life, she used her writing skills as a fundraising/communication executive for nonprofits, and authored a syndicated column in several California newspapers.
The Sierra 2 Center is at 2791 24th Street, Sacramento, which is the corner of 24th Street and 4th Avenue.
Saturday, January 28--WRITING ACTIVE HOOKS or How Many Hooks Are Enough? with Mary Buckham (Zoom meeting)
Ready to learn what exactly a Hook is, and what a Hook isn’t? The simplest way to avoid a sagging middle, and to keep a reader reading, is to understand how to continually build hooks into your writing. We'll explore what hooks are and how they work; discover the 10 most common (universal) hooks and why they’re so widely used; find where to place hooks to make them effective for both your genre and your audience, and unlock the difference between a compelling story and one that drags.
USA Today bestselling author Mary Buckham has penned two Urban Fantasy series, as well as co-authored a young adult sci-fi action-adventure series under the name Micah Caida. In her spare time Mary writes Writing Craft books including, A Writer’s Guide to Active Setting, Writing Active Hooks and Break Into Fiction® co-authored with Dianna Love.
New for 2022, we feature one-hour meetings via Zoom about technology topics. These are a member benefit (no fee) and are announced via the newsletter and our Groups/io forum, where members will find links to register and the Zoom session.
Typically the second Sunday of each month, we'll gather via Zoom to review a variety of topics related to book marketing. Also a member benefit (no fee), meetings and topics are announced in our newsletter and our Groups/io forum.
Need a little structure and team motivation to work on that important project? Give writing sprints a try!
