Meetings and Events

Monthly Meetings

NorCalRW meets the 4th Saturday of each month, online via Zoom (unless otherwise noted). Those who register and pay for the scheduled meeting will receive an email with the meeting's Zoom link. Be sure to pay at least three days in advance to allow time for the Zoom invitation to be issued.

Check in begins at 9:30 a.m. A brief business meeting begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by that month's program and speaker. We typically conclude by 12:00 noon. All times are Pacific.

Charge for meetings:

Zoom meetings: NorCalRW members pay $10 to attend each meeting. The price for non-members is $15.

In-person meetings: NorCalRW members pay $20 to attend each meeting. The price for non-members is $30.

Fees are not refundable if you are unable to attend.

Upcoming Meetings:

  • Saturday, June 25--Blurb-a-Palooza!

At our first in-person meeting in two years, we’re going to tap the collective wisdom of NCRW members for anonymous critiques of book back-cover descriptions. Blurbs will be read and shared at the meeting so members can offer feedback on how to hook readers, target the correct subgenre, and highlight your book’s tropes.

To participate in Blurb-a-Palooza, members should refer to message #396 in the groups.io forum. Even if you do not have a blurb to share, we welcome your feedback!

Non-members will undoubtedly find the discussion of interest, and are welcome at our in-person session, which will include bottled water and light snacks. (Bring your own coffee or tea if that's your pleasure!)

The facility has requested that attendees wear masks.

The Sacramento address and additional details will be provided to all who register. (Note that the registration fee is doubled for this session, to help cover meeting room expenses.)

  • Saturday, July 23--Melissa Blue: Author Branding (via Zoom)

Your brand is the promise you make to your readers. When they pick up one of your titles, what can they absolutely rely on? If you haven’t figured this out or are having trouble nailing your brand down, don’t worry. This workshop will guide you through the steps of discovering your brand, fine-tuning that promise, and then finally meshing all that knowledge together with the graphics you use for your covers, promotion, and/or website.

  • Saturday, August 27--Alyssa Alexander: Secondary But Effective: Creating and Using Secondary Characters to Strengthen Your Plot (via Zoom)

You don’t live in a vacuum, and neither does your protagonist. Every scene involves the protagonist’s relationship to the world and people around them. Learn tips and tricks to create secondary characters to effectively deepen characterization, plot, and emotion, without letting them walk off with a scene.

Tech Talks

New for 2022, we feature one-hour meetings via Zoom about technology topics. These are a member benefit (no fee) and are announced via the newsletter and our Groups/io forum, where members will find links to register and the Zoom session.

Marketing Mojo

Typically the second Sunday of each month, we'll gather via Zoom to review a variety of topics related to book marketing. Also a member benefit (no fee), meetings and topics are announced in our newsletter and our Groups/io forum.

Writing Sprints

Need a little structure and team motivation to work on that important project? Give writing sprints a try!

Three times a week, several members meet online for a brief chat and timed periods of writing. Here's when we meet:

  • Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00 - 8:30 Pacific

  • Saturdays from 1:00 - 2:30 Pacific

The Zoom link and password are listed in the members' Groups.io forum. Another great reason to join NorCal Romance Writers!

(Note that there is no fee to participate in the sprints, but you must be a member of the group.)

Events

Periodically, we host special events such as half- or full-day workshops and weekend writing retreats featuring nationally-recognized authors and writing instructors.

Members are alerted via email and announcements in the quarterly e-newsletter. Notice will also be posted here.
